The Basilica of Saphronios
The Basilica of the Bishop Sofronios is one of the most important Christian monuments in Halkidiki. It is situated in the area of Agios Georgios in Nikiti and came to light in 1981, after excavations, carried out by the 10th Ephorate of Byzantine antiquities. The monument is mostly known as the basilica of the bishop Sofronios because of an inscription found during the excavations which refers to the name “Sophronios” as the bishop of the time. The excavations revealed the walls and some marbles that today lie at the site. The church is a three-aisled, timber-roofed basilica with galleries and a narthex and has a total length of 48 meters. At the northwest corner of the narthex survive the remnants of the stairway to the upper gallery. Among the most important finds are marble statues, fresco remains and sculptures. The church is decorated with an excellent mosaic that represents two deer, a male and a female approaching to drink water from a vase.
Built in the first half of the 5th century AD, it is one of the oldest churches that have been found in the region of Macedonia. The basilica was destroyed probably by an earthquake in the 6th century AD. Being one of the most important historical buildings in the area is well worth a visit. A roof was constructed in 2003 to protect the site and especially the beautiful mosaics against the weather. Right next to the basilica stands the Folklore Museum of Nikiti.
